Gum Disease Treatment from our Dallas Dentists
Medical studies show that gum disease, or periodontitis, directly correlates to potential health risks, like heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. If your gums bleed when you brush or they appear red and swollen, you may have gum disease. At Dr. Frank L. Higginbottom and Dr. Derksen and Associates, we understand the importance of these medical findings and want to help you achieve the best gum health to optimize your physical health.
Our gum treatment program centers on prevention. After our hygienist completes your comprehensive soft tissue exam, she will give your teeth and gums a thorough cleaning. If you have signs of gum disease in its earliest stage, called gingivitis, a proper cleaning, followed by an effective homecare routine, may eradicate the disease. To be sure your personal oral hygiene is up to speed, the hygienist will provide individualized instruction on proper brushing and flossing techniques.
In cases of advanced gum disease, called periodontitis, a deeper cleaning may be necessary. Your therapy may include scaling and root planing (careful scraping smoothing of the affected tooth and root surfaces).
Left untreated, gum disease can progress into a serious issue that affects your overall health. If you believe that you may have gum disease, call Dr. Higginbottom and Dr. Derksen’s dental office in Downtown Dallas to schedule your appointment. We see patients from Highland Park, Preston Hollow, and Park Cities, too.
