Will I Experience Tooth Sensitivity After Receiving Veneers?

You’ve decided that it’s time to do something about the various chips and stains on your teeth, so you talk to your cosmetic dentist about customized veneers. After learning about their many benefits and the transformational results you can expect to achieve, you opt to move forward with treatment, looking forward to the new smile that awaits. But what about life after veneers? Will you experience tooth sensitivity or pain? Your dentist is here to explain how you can reduce the potential for sensitivity and immediately begin to enjoy your new and improved appearance.

What Should I Expect After Receiving Veneers?

Once your dentist bonds your new veneers in place over the front surfaces of your teeth, there is a chance that you might experience some slight tooth sensitivity and discomfort.

When preparing your teeth for these custom restorations, your dentist must remove a small portion of tooth enamel from each tooth to ensure proper placement and adherence. As a result, some level of sensitivity is likely because the nerve is more exposed due to there being less enamel.

Also, adjusting your bite after receiving veneers can take a few days. During this time, additional sensitivity can occur, but it should not last long, as your bite will correct itself rather quickly.

Some additional yet temporary changes you can expect after receiving veneers include:

  • A change in your speech
  • Increased saliva production
  • Gum soreness
  • Hot and cold sensitivity

Will Sensitivity Last Long?

No, you should not expect your tooth sensitivity to last longer than 1-2 weeks. Your mouth will need time to adjust to the new restorations, but taking an over-the-counter pain reliever can help ease any discomfort you might feel during this time.

If for some reason your sensitivity lasts longer, make sure to let your cosmetic dentist know right away. This can occur if a veneer becomes detached or your bite does not properly realign a few days after veneer placement.

How Can I Avoid Tooth Sensitivity?

There are a few things you can do to make sure that you reduce sensitivity after having your new veneers put in place, such as:

  • Using desensitizing toothpaste when brushing your teeth.
  • Staying away from hard, crunchy foods that apply pressure to your teeth.
  • Sticking to lukewarm beverages in the days following your treatment.
  • Avoiding spicy or sweet foods or drinks, as they can irritate your teeth.
  • Asking your dentist about a custom nightguard if you tend to grind or clench your teeth at night.
  • Rinsing with warm salt water to help with any discomfort. You can do this multiple times a day.
  • Taking an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed.

Don’t let your fear of tooth sensitivity keep you from transforming your smile with dental veneers. Taking the appropriate steps after treatment will help you avoid discomfort and allow you to begin reaping the benefits of a beautiful, new smile.
